Walailak University officially receives the flag to host the 52nd Thailand University Games, ‘Tumpang Games,’ succeeding Maejo University. The university is set to welcome student-athletes from over 100 institutions nationwide in late January 2027
On January 9, 2026, Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, led a delegation of university executives, staff, and students to officially receive the hosting flag for the 52nd Thailand University Games. The flag was presented by Associate Professor Dr. Chousit Pradabpet, Chairman of the University Sports Board of Thailand, and Associate Professor Dr. Weerapon Thongma, President of Maejo University, during the opening ceremony of the 51st Thailand University Games, ‘Inthanin Games,’ at the Commemoration Sports Center, Maejo University, Chiang Mai. In connection with the hosting preparations, Mrs. Sopida Phat, Head of the General Administration and Correspondence Division, also attended the event to observe and study the protocols and operations of the medal award ceremonies.

Professor Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong stated that Walailak University is fully prepared in all aspects, including competition venues, standard-compliant stadiums, and sports complexes. The university has also streamlined its facilities, personnel, student volunteers, and management systems to ensure that athletes, officials, and participants from institutions across the country experience convenience, safety, and a lasting impression. “We are committed to carrying forward the spirit of these games, fostering an environment of friendship, unity, and the elevation of sports to higher standards,” the President said. Furthermore, he extended a warm invitation to athletes and officials to explore the beauty of what is renowned as the “Most Beautiful Campus in Thailand” during their breaks or after their daily schedules. Highlighted attractions include various campus check-in points and the Sirin Museum, a Southern Thai arts and culture learning center located at the Tumpang Archaeological Site. Dating back to the 12th–13th Buddhist centuries, this historic site serves as the inspiration behind the name of the upcoming competition, “Tumpang Games.”

The 52nd Thailand University Games, ‘Tumpang Games,’ is scheduled to take place from January 21–30, 2027, under the theme ‘Spirit of Equality, Glory of Excellence.’ The competition will feature over 30 sports categories, ranging from compulsory sports and international elective sports to general elective sports, demonstration sports, and traditional Thai sports.
