Walailak University Celebrates 34th Anniversary of Its Establishment

On March 27, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., Walailak University held a ceremony to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the university’s establishment at the Thaiburi Building.

The ceremony was presided over by Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong, President of Walailak University, and Theerachai Chemnasiri, Chairman of the University Council. The event began with a merit-making ceremony and alms offering of rice and dried food to 34 Buddhist monks, symbolizing the university’s 34 years of establishment. The event also included a Buddhist merit dedication ceremony in memory of Prof. Dr. Wichit Srisa-an, who made significant contributions to the university, as well as deceased faculty members, staff, and students. In addition, Islamic prayers (Du’a) and Christian blessings were conducted to bring prosperity and good fortune to the university’s administrators, staff, and students.The ceremony was attended by Mr. Suwat Chansuk, Deputy Governor of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, heads of government agencies from Tha Sala District and Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, as well as university executives, staff members, and students.

On this occasion, Theerachai Chemnasiri delivered a congratulatory speech, stating that the university’s achievements over the past 34 years have resulted from the dedication, commitment, and continuous efforts of administrators, faculty members, and staff. These efforts have enabled Walailak University to gain recognition in global university rankings and move forward as a quality institution distinguished in academic and research excellence.Looking ahead, the university has set ambitious goals. By 2027, when Walailak University celebrates its 35th anniversary, major commemorative events will be organized alongside initiatives aimed at achieving the goal of becoming one of the top five universities in Thailand. In addition, Prof. Dr. Sombat Thamrongthanyawong delivered a special lecture titled “Nine Years of Transformation.” He highlighted that over the past nine years the university has adopted proactive management strategies to address challenges and elevate the quality of education and research to international standards. Currently, the university is ranked 1201+ globally and 6th in Thailand by Times Higher Education, with a target to move into the 1001+ global ranking band and 4th place in Thailand within the next two years.

The ceremony also featured the presentation of royal decorations before the portrait of King Vajiralongkorn, recognition plaques for staff members who have served the university for 25 years, commemorative gifts for those with over 30 years of service, and the presentation of Distinguished Alumni Awards of Walailak University.

The event was organized by the Division of Correspondence and General Affairs, which served as the secretariat responsible for coordinating the ceremony and related activities.
